Have you heard of fan funding on YouTube? This post from MiniTool Video Converter will tell you what it is, how it works, as well as how to set up fan funding on YouTube.

What Is YouTube Fan Funding

Many viewers want to show their support to their favorite YouTube channels and creators by making voluntary donations. To make this possible, YouTube introduced a feature called fan funding in September 2014. It’s a way for content creators to monetize their YouTube channels and engage with their fans by offering exclusive perks and services.

This was in response to creators using other platforms like PayPal and Patreon to fund their content creation. It is also known as Tip Jar, as it allows viewers to leave a tip for the creators they appreciate. There are three types of fan funding features available on YouTube:

Channel memberships: Fans can become members by making recurring monthly payments in exchange for access to members-only perks.

Super Chat & Super Stickers: Your fans can pay to get their messages or animated images highlighted in live chat streams.

Super Thanks: Your fans pay to view a fun animation and have their message highlighted in the comments section of your Shorts and long-form video.

How Does YouTube Fan Funding Work

YouTube fan funding works by enabling a Tip Jar button on the channel page and in specific videos of eligible creators. Viewers can click on the Tip Jar button and choose an amount to donate, via Google Wallet, a secure online payment service. The creator will receive an email notification and a message from the donor if they choose to leave one. The creator can also thank the donor by sending a video or a message.

However, not every YouTube creator can set up fan funding for their YouTube channels. It is currently available in Australia, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. In addition, you must meet the following requirements to be eligible for it:

  • Have an approved AdSense account linked to their YouTube channel.
  • Be part of the YouTube Partner Program.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Verify their YouTube account with their phone number.
  • Have their channel set as the primary channel in Google Wallet.
  • Set their channel location to one of the supported countries.
